An opportunity to learn ombré dyeing from the ground-up – Students will be encouraged to bring their own inspirations to class; be it a photograph, a piece of fabric or even a favourite sweater. From there we will discuss what makes a harmonious yarn, the basics of dyeing and how to narrow their inspirations down to colours that will work. We will begin with acid dye, discussing how acid dye works and how different factors such as pH and water temperature can impact your colours. We will explore a variety of dye application techniques, including hand-painting, immersion dyeing and speckling. We will create 2 skeins of yarn that are evocative of the students inspirations. From there we will use our new skills to create one ombre yarn; using the sock blank method combined with hand painting techniques, evocative of the students inspiration photo. Students will take home 3 skeins; two tonal yarns and one gradient yarn.
Please wear comfortable clothing that you can get dirty in. All other material is provided. If you have an apron, feel free to bring it.
